Skipper G. StipeMaas, GHPLC’s founding Executive Director, is a Community Economic Development Attorney specializing in heirs property and nonprofit, land-based development projects involving complex real estate acquisitions, conservation easements, affordable housing development, and leasehold agreements.

Delene W. Porter

Delene W. Porter, GHPLC’s Chief Operating Officer, recently served as the founding CEO & President of the Athens Area Community Foundation, stewarding $6 million in community assets and making over $1.5 million in grants to nonprofit organizations.  Delene brings over 10 years of experience in capacity building and technical assistance to organizations working on community development and wealth building.

LEGAL PROGRAMS DIRECTOR

Joann E. Johnston

Joann E. Johnston, the Center’s Legal Programs Director, spent 10 years working for large Atlanta law firms as a civil litigator. Joann represented clients in complex multi-state litigation and appeals involving title disputes, lender liability defense, federal and state regulatory compliance and unfair and deceptive trade practices claims. Joann’s passion is using her legal training to work with families to overcome generational poverty and homelessness.

RURAL STAFF ATTORNEY

Veronica M. A. McClendon

Veronica M. A. McClendon, the Center’s Rural Staff Attorney, received a Skadden Fellowship, dubbed the “legal peace corps” program, after law school and worked for Georgia Legal Services Program where she excelled at bringing diverse stakeholders together through community outreach and education. Her Fellowship was followed by practice in several Macon law firms which covered a wide range of legal work including debtor relief and estate planning law.

STAFF ATTORNEY

Jim Davis

Jim Davis, the Center’s Staff Attorney, served for eleven and a half years as senior attorney for the Athens-Clarke County Attorney’s office, where he had primary responsibility for the nuisance abatement program to repair or remove blighted properties, and represented local government in quality of life and housing code violation cases. Jim previously worked for Georgia Legal Services Program and, before becoming an attorney, Jim spent 20 years as a senior consultant to U.S. and European government agencies on nuclear security and nonproliferation.

Equal Justice Works Georgia Housing Corps Advocate

Jazz Watts

Jazz Watts holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Speech Communication and Theater from the University of Georgia and a Master of Arts in Mass Communication from the University of Florida. Jazz is an heirs property owner and Sapelo Island descendent. Jazz wrote and curated “The Sapelo Project,” which was presented at Theater Emory in February 2014. The theater piece integrates music, movement, spoken word, acting, and cinema to capture some of the culture and stories of Sapelo Island and the development of the Saltwater Geechee-Gullah dialect, the history of slavery on the island, and the melding of influences of Arabic, English, Spanish and French.

Equal Justice Works Georgia Housing Corps Fellow

Gentry E. Mander

Gentry Mander is the Center’s Equal Justice Works Georgia Housing Corps Urban Legal Fellow. She has spent the last two years practicing estate planning law in a small firm in Atlanta. Gentry received her J.D. and a certificate in Environmental and Land Use Planning Law from the University of Florida, where she served as the co-chair for the Public Interest Environmental Conference and a research assistant for the director of the Conservation Clinic. Driven by a passion for equity, Gentry chose to simultaneously pursue a master’s in sustainable development practice, collaborating with a small international non-profit on her field practicum to research the economic viability of shade-grown cacao.

Equal Justice Works Georgia Housing Corps Fellow

Alexandria J. Arnold

Alexandria Arnold is the Center’s Equal Justice Works Georgia Housing Corps Rural Legal Fellow. She graduated from Kennesaw State University with a Bachelor’s degree in English and then received her Juris Doctorate from Howard University School of Law. After becoming a member of the Georgia Bar, Alexandria practiced law in Fairbanks, Alaska as a staff attorney with Alaska Legal Services. After her return to Georgia, Alexandria prepared contracts for one of the world's chief providers of medical information before joining the Center's staff. Alexandria's return to public interest work stems from her desire to help others and to use her skills as an attorney to provide legal services to those who may not otherwise be able to afford it.

Teresa G. Moore

Teresa Moore is the Center’s Equal Justice Works Georgia Housing Corps Rural Advocate. She attends Capella University where she is completing her Bachelor's degree in Human Resources Management. Teresa has a background in sales and marketing as well as extensive knowledge about nonprofits. As a native of South Georgia, Teresa is excited to see Georgia Heirs Property Law Center expand and serve the clients of Southwest Georgia.
